Microsoft recently released a web-based version of its Windows app store with the goal of improving user experience and simplifying program discovery. This new version replaces the old method of discovering Windows programs on the internet. When customers click on links on the website, they are opened in the Microsoft Store on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
In this upgrade, Microsoft has abandoned its antiquated React codebase in favor of a contemporary internet model built on cutting-edge technologies. The new store employs Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend, resulting in a more eco-friendly and responsive interface.
“The old site was a React codebase built on an obsoleted UI framework,” explains Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “We created a fresh user experience with a thoughtfully designed interface, easier ways to discover new apps, modern web tech stack. I hope folks will find it useful.”

Microsoft’s freshly launched store provides consumers with an uninterrupted means to search for windows software and Xbox computer video games, all of which are available through the principal Microsoft Store app on Windows. It’s important to note that this online version isn’t meant to replace the main Microsoft store app; rather, it’s meant to supplement it. “Think of this as the web front to the app store on Windows” Gabriel says. “They work together.”
Microsoft’s strategic move with this web interface is especially significant as the company extends its app and game ecosystem outside the bounds of Windows. Phil Spencer, Xbox’s CEO, said earlier this year that Microsoft is in the midst of establishing an Xbox mobile gaming save, a move prompted in part by the anticipated legal changes. With firms like Apple and Google likely compelled to open up their mobile app stores, Microsoft is preparing for a new era of growth and accessibility.
Microsoft’s Xbox cell gaming store may see the light of day as early as 2024, according to the eu’s virtual Markets Act, which is set to be implemented. A functional internet interface becomes critical to the success of this expansion. This interface not only ensures discoverability in search results, but also allows for seamless sharing through social media networks, resulting in a robust and integrated environment for Microsoft’s applications and video games.
